It’s the first day of spring! And that means that thoughts are lightly turning towards love, pilgrimages (see Chaucer), and fairy tales! If you were here last year, you may remember the Once Upon a Time challenge, hosted by Carl from Stainless Steel Droppings (home of the Sci Fi Experience too).
The plan: read fairy tales, fairy tale retellings, fantasy… And since that’s pretty much what I DO, I’m so excited! I’ve not read many fairy tale retellings lately, so I’ve got them lined up. In fact, I started (re)reading Robin McKinley’s Rose Daughter this morning. 🙂 Technically the challenge starts tomorrow, but, you know, close enough. I’ll still be reading it tomorrow.
There’s a whole list of Quests, which I selected and pursued last year. This year I’m embracing the casual nature of Carl’s “experiences” and deciding to let the chips fall where they will. I’ll go for those books I have lined up, and see how it sorts out in the end.

It’s been forever since I’ve read any fairy tale retellings, although I do enjoy them. I remember loving Beautywhen I read it. Enjoy!

Last year I read McKinley’s ‘Beauty’ for OUaT and liked it very much. I’d previously only read her ‘Sunshine’… loved that too. I really should read some more of her writing. Good luck with the challenge!
I don’t think I’ve ever met a McKinley book I didn’t like… Deerskin was so intense I’ll probably never read it again, and Sunshine was a bit high on the blood, but I absolutely love Beauty, Rose Daughter and Spindle’s End.

I am finishing up the third book in a trilogy I started on the weekend. Since I plan to review all 3 books in the same post, I am going to cheat and count all 3 of them… Normally I am pretty strict about only counting what I read starting today, but ah, well. 🙂 I hope you read a lot of great books for the challenge!
Oh, go ahead and count them. Sometimes I think of trilogies (or quartets, or whatever) as very long chunksters that got divided into volumes. It’s all part of a whole. Thanks for stopping by, and I hope you find lots of great books too!

That’s very true. Many trilogies are that… I would be scared to see the page length if they were released as one book!
True! And somehow I have trouble bringing myself to read enormous chunksters, but I’m fine with reading an entire quartet in a row–I don’t quite understand that about myself!
I agree, last night was close enough. You know I’m no stickler. I started reading a fantasy/sf blend a few weeks back that I will review for the challenge when I’m finished!
