Quotable Brenda Ueland

Writing, the creative effort, the use of the imagination, should come first–at least for some part of every day of your life…No writing is a waste of time–no creative work where the feelings, the imagination, the intelligence must work.”

– Brenda Ueland, in her excellent book, If You Want to Write

  1. Great quote and one whose ideas are applicable beyond just those who want to be “writers”. First of all, those of us who blog ‘write’ and not all of us have an active passion to be ‘writers’ per se. But we should still exercise that creativity regularly. I also love the idea of daily use of the imagination. I think it is important, especially as we get older, to not lose the joy of daydreaming and of imagining.

    1. Absolutely agreed that this is applicable beyond just “writing,” or any narrow definition of writing. Elsewhere in the book, Ueland states that when she refers to “writing” she really means any act of creativity that speaks to the person doing it. And I’m convinced that exercising creativity and the imagination are what keep them alive!
