Aim for the Stars

2014sfexp400It feels like we just finished the last reading experience from Stainless Steel Droppings (because we did!) but it’s already time to start thinking about the Sci Fi Experience (not that I’m complaining…)  The Experience runs from December to the end of January, a low-pressure, high-fun invitation to enjoy some science fiction.

Sci Fi is a genre I love more than I actually read, so I always value the push to pick up something with phasers or hyperdrive in it!

I didn’t intend this, but my plans this year all center around rereads, as I have quite a few sci fi books I’ve been itching to revisit.  I’ve been meaning to reread The Masterharper of Pern by Anne McCaffrey ever since our Dragonflight group read for the last Sci Fi Experience.  Masterharper Robinton is one of my very favorite characters, yet I barely remember the book centered around him!

I also plan to reread the Timothy Zahn Thrawn Trilogy, landmark books in the Star Wars universe that I have not read recently enough.  If I feel particularly inspired, I might go on to the two follow-up books, which I haven’t read before.

Sci Fi Experience 2013My biggest planned event for the Experience this year centers around my favorite sci fi franchise of all–Star Trek.  I’m going to take this opportunity to finally make an attempt at a reading and viewing experience I’ve been thinking about doing for a long time.

I’m calling this (tongue in cheek!) The Great Khan Adventure.  Likely you’ve heard of Khan Noonien Singh, arguably the greatest villain of The Original Series.  There is a wonderful, meticulously researched trilogy of books by Greg Cox centered around Khan, presenting an alternate history of the 1960s through 1990s, and then exploring Khan’s time in exile.  I’ve watched or read all the pieces of the story at different times–but I want to attempt to put it all together.

Cox ties together several episodes and characters from different strands of Star Trek, so I plan to start by watching those as base material: Spaceseed, Operation: Earth, Tomorrow Is Yesterday, Requiem for Methuselah, and DS9: Little Green Men.  Those are the episodes I remember as relevant from my last reading; I’ll add others on if I find more relating as I go through the books.  Next of course, a reread of the Cox trilogy, wrapped-up by The Wrath of Khan (which may lead me to The Search for Spock and The Voyage Home, just because).  Then I’ll probably throw in Star Trek Into Darkness as a why-not add-on.

So–Pern, Star Wars and Star Trek.  I’m looking forward to visiting some of my very favorite science fiction universes, and I hope you’ll come along for the voyage!

Saturday Snapshot: Launch Day Celebration

This is an exciting weekend…because yesterday was Launch Day for my novel!  Since my writing group was also meeting yesterday, naturally I had to bring something to celebrate!

Launch Day CakeYou could say that I made one of these things from scratch…and just added some crucial decoration to the other.

Have a splendid weekend!  And visit West Metro Mommy for more Saturday Snapshots. 😉

Saturday Snapshot: Novel Proof!

I’ve mentioned a time or two 😉 that I have a novel coming out…and we’re getting close!  Launch Date, November 15th, is less than a week away!  The Wanderers will be available in paperback and ebook.  Ebooks aren’t so easy to photograph, so today I’m sharing pictures of the paperback.  Technically this is the final proof, but it’s what the published book will look like too…

Wanderers (3)Wanderers (4)Wanderers (1)Wanderers (2)Every writer I know agrees that the arrival of the proof is one of the most exciting parts of the process…suddenly it’s all real! 🙂

I hope you have a wonderful weekend–and you can visit West Metro Mommy for more Saturday Snapshots.

Blog Hop: Scheduling Memes and Reviews

book blogger hopThis week’s Book Blogger Hop question: When you are out of town, do you still participate in weekly memes or do you have your post scheduled to appear on your blog and perhaps check back? Or do you not participate at all?

Handling memes while out of town isn’t too challenging for me, because all the memes I regularly participate in are ones I can easily prepare ahead of time.  With only the occasional exception, I schedule all my blog posts (for instance, I’m writing this on a Monday…)  You may have noticed they all publish at the same time of day!  Scheduling ahead lets me avoid the stress of needing to do last-minute writing, which for me works much better.

Anyway, the challenge when I’m out of town isn’t putting the memes on my blog, but getting my post linked on the host blog.  Sometimes I link up very early before I leave town, or use my smart phone later.

So all that adds up to–yes, I do generally still participate while traveling.  It’s not as much fun, of course, because I usually don’t have time/opportunity to interact with the other participants…but I can still be involved a bit by posting.

Anyone else who’s run into this?  What’s your strategy on memes-while-traveling?

Addendum: So it turns out I misread the schedule, and answered last week’s question!  Meaning you’re getting a double-feature today…  This week’s question is: Do you post your book reviews as soon as you have completed the book or do you wait a few days?

As noted above, I don’t post hardly anything immediately.  The more relevant point may be whether I write the reviews as soon as I finished the book or wait, and…I don’t have a definitive answer.  Often I wait a few days until I have a convenient space to write up a review.  Sometimes I’m so inspired that I write a review immediately.  Other times books sit around for a couple of weeks before I get around to writing the review.  Oddly, it doesn’t seem to have much to do with how much I enjoyed the reading…

So–how do you schedule your writing and/or posting?

Saturday Snapshot: Halloween Display

Since Halloween was just this past week, it seems like the ideal weekend to share a shot of my favorite Halloween decorations I saw this year…

P1020689This invasion of giant spiders is so much fun…although maybe I think so because I don’t have a fear of spiders!  But I love the way there are no other Halloween decorations, nothing to tip off that it isn’t really an invasion.  There’s a certain subtlety to it–if you can talk about subtlety in connection with giant spiders!

I hope you had a wonderful Halloween!  Visit West Metro Mommy for more Saturday Snapshots. 🙂
