Blog Hop: Bookish Collections

book blogger hopThis week’s Book Blogger Hop question: Do you collect things that are book related? Like bookmarks, nameplates, 1st editions…

I mostly just collect books!  I wouldn’t say I have any collections of bookish things, but I do have a handful of souvenirs that I bought because of their bookish connections…

P1030436I visited the Harry Potter Studio Tour earlier this year, and couldn’t resist buying a wand at what must be the coolest gift store ever (boxes of wands, piled everywhere!)  You can get pretty much any character you could possibly want, but I decided on Hermione’s, because it’s gorgeous but more importantly because–seriously, Hermione?  SO awesome. Blog Hop: Bookmarks

book blogger hopThis week’s Book Blogger Hop question: Do you use bookmarks? If so, do you match them to the book you’re reading or do you use random scraps of paper?

I have a bookmark collection, and have been mostly using the same ones for ten years or so.  They’re all home-made, and I remade some just a  few months ago because they were getting rather tattered around the corners.

My bookmark collection, essentially, reflects some of my very favorite characters…

Bookmarks (1)Mostly, it’s the characters I wrote stories about in my fanfiction days–and so they continue to live in my head (and the books I read) in a way that other much beloved characters do not.  The exception to that rule is the Doctor Who bookmark, which I created new when I was refurbishing the others.  That’s also my only two-sided bookmark…

Bookmarks (3)When I’m thinking about it, I like to match characters to the book I’m reading (a couple of recent reads involving Rome were definite Kirk books, for instance, while Peter Pan usually lands in the kids books).  But I don’t always think about it, and end up using the same one for weeks!

Do you have favorite bookmarks you like to use?  Any particular habits around them?

Blog Hop: Hearing a Story

book blogger hopThis week’s Book Blogger Hop question: Do you listen to audiobooks?

I do!  I only started in the last few years, which I largely account to reading other bloggers’ accounts of listening to audiobooks.  I also started a new job a few months ago with a longer commute, so I get more audiobook time in.  I only listen to audiobooks in the car, and out of respect for the fact that I am, after all, driving, I tend to listen to rereads rather than new books.  And preferably ones that won’t be too suspenseful.

Though I also have a habit of listening to Agatha Christie novels, which are both new to me and suspenseful so…I can’t explain that. Continue reading “Blog Hop: Hearing a Story”

Blog Hop: Gathering for Book Discussion

book blogger hopThis week’s Book Blogger Hop question: If you are in a book club, where do you meet? A restaurant, someone’s home, the library?

I am in a book club!  We’re a pretty laid-back one, we read a variety of books, and usually the conversation turns towards Star Wars at some point.  One of my favorite conversations?  A semi-serious one about the best weapon to use against zombies, and the decision was for lightsabers.  Clearly, I know awesome people. 🙂

I’ve been in this book club for…long enough that I’ve lost track.  I think about four years?  Currently we meet at a restaurant on a Monday night, for dinner and book discussion.  Over the years we’ve also done coffee shops and parks, which both worked pretty well too (well, the parks are only good some parts of the year…)  The public location is nice when we want to encourage new people to join, and we’ve never had problems with loud venues–or being too loud ourselves.

I’m also in a writing group, and we meet weekly at a pizza place.

Anyone else in a book club?  How do you handle meetings?

Blog Hop: Quitting a Story

book blogger hopThis week’s Book Blogger Hop question: Why would you stop reading a book? Too long, wrong genre, bad language, not what you expected, or something totally different?

I had to think about this, because I rarely stop reading a book once I start it.  Partially that’s because I’m pretty judicious about what books I pick up to begin with, and (maybe more so) partially that’s because I have a lot of trouble stopping midway through a story.  I’m a completist–I like to read entire series, or every book a favorite author wrote, and I have a hard time stopping partway through even a story I don’t like.

Sometimes, if a book is really bothering me, I’ll very deliberately finish it anyway–because I can close the book and be done with it, while a half-finished story tends to linger in my mind in a very bothersome way.

So when I do quit a book, it tends to be because the style or narrative is not at all what I was expecting, to an extent that I’m actively not enjoying the reading.  I’ve noted several unfinished books on my list of books read, and a couple were surreal to the point that I couldn’t get into the story at all (though one was philosophical and the other was just TOO silly), one turned out to be experimental poetry I couldn’t make any sense out of, one was far more violent than I had expected, and two were just flat boring.  And then there was one that made me so ANGRY with the clearly abusive relationship presented as romantic that I quit on page 65 in genuine fear I would throw the book across the room if I kept reading.

The most recent book I quit (which will remain nameless) I might yet go back to…it was by an author I like a lot, there was a promise of a masked Robin Hood figure and I really expected to like it–but it was in a quasi-medieval setting, and something about the grinding poverty and the utter lack of life options for the heroine just really depressed me.  And it’s not like I haven’t read other books with those elements, or people in far more immediate crises, and I was guessing life would eventually turn around…but I wasn’t willing to wait for it and be depressed in the meantime.  I might have picked it up on an off-day, though, so I may yet try it again…

So much for me!  What causes you to drop a book halfway through?
