Saturday Snapshot: Knick-Knacks

I like everything I own to have a story.  That doesn’t extend to, say, my shampoo or silverware, but it does include my knick-knacks.

Shelf - Barrie Fairies

I saw these adorable fairies for sale in Covent Gardens.  Having just spent a week wandering around Kensington Gardens with fairies on my mind, I couldn’t resist.  Naturally I keep them in front of my J. M. Barrie collection.

Shelf - Fandom

Here you see the result of some of my fandoms…my shelf of Star Trek books also houses Trevor the Tribble, Kirk and Spock salt-and-pepper shakers, and a Data action figure that I bought at my first ever job, at KayBee Toys (for the record, I don’t recommend working in a toy store for the Christmas season).

On the next shelf, my Phantom collection, with a model of the Paris Opera House, and then my Pirate collection.  I bought the “solemn” Captain Jack action figure because the grinning one was terrifying (really), and I managed to get a Captain Jack Happy Meal toy without actually buying any food at McDonalds.

Shelf - Lucky Cat

A less obvious connection here…but I have a Lucky Cat figurine that I bought in Chinatown in San Francisco, and it’s on this shelf because Keladry, heroine of the Protector of the Small quartet, has a collection of Lucky Cat figures.

Those are my cleverest book-and-knick-knack combinations…but perhaps I’ll share other knick-knacks another day! 🙂  Do you have any with fun stories?

Saturday Snapshot: “Do Sit and Enjoy Life”

Whew–I don’t know about you, but 2013 seems to be starting crazy busy!  With very good things…but BUSY!  So for Saturday Snapshot today, I thought perhaps a few peaceful pictures from one of my favorite places.

You were already guessing Kensington Gardens, right? 🙂

The inscription reads: “Pam Weisweiller was here – do sit and enjoy life”

So this weekend, I hope you take some time to just sit and enjoy life!

Saturday Snapshot: Christmas Weekend

I hope you all had a wonderful holiday!  I thought I’d share a few photos from the weekend…

Christmas Cookies

My mom and I have a Christmas tradition of baking cookies together.  We’ve done it every year for over twenty years.  This Christmas, we made peanut butter cookies and lemon bars.  Delicious!

Lucky by the Fire

And surely nothing says Christmas like a happy cat by a fire.  This is Lucky’s favorite spot in the winter.  She’ll lay there happily for hours when there’s a fire–and lay there pointedly, when there isn’t!

Saturday Snapshot: A Party for the End of the World

A friend of mine had planned to host a holiday party Friday evening–and when she realized it was the last day of the Mayan calendar, it promptly became a Holidoom party, with appropriately-themed food and activities.  There were Ground Zero Grilled Cheese sandwiches, Dinosaur chicken nuggets, a Chocolate Tar Pit, and Zombie Gingerbread Men.  And I am happy to report that we saved the world in a truly epic game of Pandemic.

It was a pot-luck, so before the party I set myself thinking along the lines of puns…and cooked up a dish of Mushroom Clouds, Radiation Leeks and Mutant Yellow Tomatoes.

I couldn’t come up with much in the way of themed-clothes, but I did wear my skull-and-crossbones socks!

Heading to any holiday parties this weekend? Ever been to a party with a stranger theme?

Saturday Snapshot: Christmas Decorations

Last weekend was fairly Christmassy–I spent part of Saturday decorating, and part of Sunday wrapping presents.  I have a small apartment, so I just get a little tree to set on a table.  But I seem to have bought small presents this year, so everything fit under it too.

Christmas Tree

I discovered that the tree looked far more interesting photographed in the dark!

I also put up my musical shepherds every year.

Christmas Shepherds (1)

These gentlemen and their flock were part of my grandpa’s Christmas decorations when he was growing up, so they’re probably about 75 years old.  You can still see the price stamped on some of the pieces: each sheep was five cents, and each shepherd was twenty-nine cents!

Christmas Shepherds (2)

Here’s a closer view.  I love how each shepherd is so individual, with his own personality.  Some day I must write a story about them.  They’re a bit worn–but that just means they have history!

What are your favorite holiday decorations?  I’d love to hear about them!
