Blog Wander: Over the Effing Rainbow

Wanderers 8 - Small CopyIn case you missed it–my novel launched last Friday!  Over the next few weeks, I’ll be doing some interviews and guest posts around the blogosphere.  I was going to call it a blog tour…until it occurred to me that my book is, after all, called The Wanderers.  So clearly this can only be called a Blog Wander!

Today we’re kicking things off with an interview with Lisa, who blogs on Over the Effing Rainbow.  Lisa is a “Scottish writer of prose-based RPG/voracious reader of science fiction and fantasy in most of its forms. Tea junkie, Dresdenphile, nail polish enthusiast, nibbler of cheese, devourer of cake.”  Couldn’t resist stealing that off her blog page.  🙂

So make some tea and head over the rainbow for an interview!

On another novel note, I sent out an email announcement over the weekend–if you didn’t receive it and would like to be added to my email list in the future for novel updates and exclusive content, please send an email to LettersToTheCat @ gmail.com to get added!

Aim for the Stars

2014sfexp400It feels like we just finished the last reading experience from Stainless Steel Droppings (because we did!) but it’s already time to start thinking about the Sci Fi Experience (not that I’m complaining…)  The Experience runs from December to the end of January, a low-pressure, high-fun invitation to enjoy some science fiction.

Sci Fi is a genre I love more than I actually read, so I always value the push to pick up something with phasers or hyperdrive in it!

I didn’t intend this, but my plans this year all center around rereads, as I have quite a few sci fi books I’ve been itching to revisit.  I’ve been meaning to reread The Masterharper of Pern by Anne McCaffrey ever since our Dragonflight group read for the last Sci Fi Experience.  Masterharper Robinton is one of my very favorite characters, yet I barely remember the book centered around him!

I also plan to reread the Timothy Zahn Thrawn Trilogy, landmark books in the Star Wars universe that I have not read recently enough.  If I feel particularly inspired, I might go on to the two follow-up books, which I haven’t read before.

Sci Fi Experience 2013My biggest planned event for the Experience this year centers around my favorite sci fi franchise of all–Star Trek.  I’m going to take this opportunity to finally make an attempt at a reading and viewing experience I’ve been thinking about doing for a long time.

I’m calling this (tongue in cheek!) The Great Khan Adventure.  Likely you’ve heard of Khan Noonien Singh, arguably the greatest villain of The Original Series.  There is a wonderful, meticulously researched trilogy of books by Greg Cox centered around Khan, presenting an alternate history of the 1960s through 1990s, and then exploring Khan’s time in exile.  I’ve watched or read all the pieces of the story at different times–but I want to attempt to put it all together.

Cox ties together several episodes and characters from different strands of Star Trek, so I plan to start by watching those as base material: Spaceseed, Operation: Earth, Tomorrow Is Yesterday, Requiem for Methuselah, and DS9: Little Green Men.  Those are the episodes I remember as relevant from my last reading; I’ll add others on if I find more relating as I go through the books.  Next of course, a reread of the Cox trilogy, wrapped-up by The Wrath of Khan (which may lead me to The Search for Spock and The Voyage Home, just because).  Then I’ll probably throw in Star Trek Into Darkness as a why-not add-on.

So–Pern, Star Wars and Star Trek.  I’m looking forward to visiting some of my very favorite science fiction universes, and I hope you’ll come along for the voyage!

Riding Towards Narnia

After listening to The Magician’s Nephew on audiobook, I continued my adventures through Narnia with The Horse and His Boy.  It’s the third book, chronologically, but I reread The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe relatively recently, so I jumped on ahead.

The Horse and His Boy is set during The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe–or during the reign of High King Peter, in in-universe timeline.  This book centers on new characters, with the characters from the previous book only in supporting roles.  This is the story of Shasta and talking horse Bree, who flee the oppressive empire of Calormen, trying to reach the free kingdom of Narnia.  They join forces with Aravis, a Calormene aristocrat fleeing an arranged marriage, and her talking horse, Hwin.  Their mission takes on new urgency when they overhear Calormene plans to conquer Narnia and neighboring Archenland.

This one started a little slow for me, though I’m not sure why.  It may have just been me, but it took me a while to get involved with the characters.  I found it picked up right around the same time the Narnians first arrived in the story.  I don’t know if that was because of them, or because the threats from Calormen became more pronounced then, or if I’d just been listening long enough to get engaged.  After that, the book has more momentum as it becomes a desperate race to warn Archenland and Narnia before invading forces arrive.

As in The Magician’s Nephew, I found the supporting characters highly engaging.  The talking horses were particularly good, as Narnian exiles both eager and anxious about going home again.  Bree is decidedly arrogant, while Hwin is sweet and altogether too self-effacing.  I also liked the glimpses of Lucy, Edmund and Susan as adults…although it adds hugely to the tragedy of the previous book, when they’re pulled out of Narnia and sent home to be children again!!  They had amazing lives in Narnia–how do you go home after that?  But that’s classic children’s fantasy for you…

I liked Shasta and Aravis well enough too, if not extraordinarily.  Perhaps a little context on that comment, though…  When I reread The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, it was because I had just read The Magicians by Lev Grossman, which made me desperately want to run back to Narnia.  So now any time I feel at all disengaged from characters in Narnia, all I have to do is remind myself–I could be reading about Quentin and his friends from The Magicians–and then I’m very happy to be with Lewis’ characters instead!  So take “disengaged” as a relative term…

Although I enjoyed the Narnians so much, it was also fun to see a different country in this world.  Calormen has Middle Eastern elements, and was very richly described.  Archenland was less developed, but I really liked the bits in the Epilogue about Archenland’s history.  Seeing multiple countries, with their own governments and cultures, gave a much more grounded feel to the magical country.

All in all, this isn’t my favorite installment of Narnia (so far Magician’s Nephew is still holding title) but it was a good ride!

Saturday Snapshot: Launch Day Celebration

This is an exciting weekend…because yesterday was Launch Day for my novel!  Since my writing group was also meeting yesterday, naturally I had to bring something to celebrate!

Have a splendid weekend!  And visit West Metro Mommy for more Saturday Snapshots. 😉

Launch Day! My Novel Is Out!

Wanderers 8 - Small CopyAfter all these weeks building up, it’s finally here–Launch Day!  My novel, The Wanderers, is now available!

You can get a copy on Amazon (paperback and Kindle), Barnes and Noble (Nook) or Smashwords (alternate ebook formats).  It’s $2.99 as an ebook or $11.99 in paper–though right now Amazon is offering a sale on the paperback.  I don’t control that and I don’t know how long it will last, so you may want to jump now!

If you’ve somehow missed previous posts on this subject and are feeling a little perplexed, you can jump over to the Novel News page for more information about the book.  If you’ve been following along, the journey doesn’t end today!  Starting next week, I have a series of interviews, guest posts, giveaways and coupons lined up that I can’t wait to share with you.

And I have to give a big thank-you to all you wonderful people who have been so supportive along the way.  It’s always hard for writers to send their words out into the world.  Sharing my blogging words with such a great community has made the next step a little less intimidating.  🙂
