Blog Hop: A Belated Bookish Halloween

book blogger hopThis was actually the Book Blogger Hop question a couple weeks ago, the same Friday my novel came out, but I was a little busy that day… 🙂  So I’m posting it this week instead leading up to Halloween, because I like the question!

You’re having a costume party with the theme “Book Characters.” Who would you go as?

September, from the Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland series! I actually did dress up as September one Halloween, in her orange dress, green coat (which I still have and still think of as the Coat of the Green Wind) and autumn leaves in my hair—because of the scene when September turns into an autumn tree. Absolutely no one recognized the costume, but I had fun with it!

I might also like to be Beauty from Rose-Daughter, if I could come up with something fun with roses—fake ones twined around my arms, perhaps.

I’ve also thought about being Susan, Death’s granddaughter from Discworld. I’d just need the right wig (white with a black streak), a dramatic black cloak, and a fireplace poker.

The challenge, I discovered when I was trying to come up with a bookish costume and landed on September, is that too many of my favorite characters simply don’t have distinctive enough appearances! Short of finding armor (and a red wig), I wouldn’t know how to dress up as Alanna from the Song of the Lioness.

Have you ever dressed up in a bookish costume? Or is there one you’d love to try?

Blog Hop: What’s In a Name?

book blogger hopThis week’s Book Blogger Hop question: How many years have you been blogging, and is there a story behind your blog’s name?

I started my blog November 1st, 2010, so it will be five years in another couple months (wow, it goes by!)

Some time years before that I stumbled on L. Frank Baum’s quote: “For since I can remember, my eyes have always grown big at tales of the marvelous.” The funny thing is, it’s a woefully unnoticed quote. It’s buried in an author’s note at the beginning of one of his lesser-known novels, and no one else seems to know about it. Seriously, do a Google search for “L. Frank Baum” “tales of the marvelous.” You’ll get very few hits and most of them will be my blog.

I thought it was a lovely turn of phrase and when I needed a name for my blog I decided it was a good one to adopt, since no one else appeared to appreciate it!

Blog Hop: Buying Library Books

book blogger hopThis week’s Book Blogger Hop question: What time of the year does your library have its library sale?

My library does a warehouse sale about every two months, which is completely brilliant. Best prices in town–$1 for kids books and paperbacks, $2 for hardbacks. But a couple of times a year they do a brown bag sale—just $6 for as many books as you can fit in a grocery bag. I brought home 17 books last time…

The warehouse sale is very bad for my bookshelf space, but very good for my book budget! And I’ve been able to find some books I really love and would have spent a lot more money on if I had to. I’ve also bought some books (especially at the brown bag sale) that I might not have bought if I hadn’t been able to throw them into the one bag for the same price—but while I usually only buy books I know I want to keep, in this case I make an exception. And if I read the book and don’t want to keep it, of course I donate it back to the library!

Blog Hop: On-Call Books

book blogger hopThis week’s Book Blogger Hop question: Are you ever without a book?

Never.

I bring a book to work, on errands, to the doctor’s office, any time I’m meeting someone, to most parties (and never read it), to every meeting of my weekly writing group (where, in three years, I’m positive I’ve never read a book), and…pretty much any other situation you could think of. I’ve gone to the movies alone and read while waiting for the movie to start (though the lighting can be a challenge). I’ve read standing in line at the grocery store and while waiting in line to climb the towers of Notre Dame Cathedral. The only time I don’t have a book with me is when I go for my morning walk and only carry my keys and cell phone—which has a Kindle app, so technically I do have books with me.

Because you just never know when you might have time to read!

Blog Hop: Holiday Reviews

book blogger hopThis week’s Book Blogger Hop question: Do you ever do a review post based on a holiday? For example review Christmas theme books in December.

Frequently!  Although it often turns into movie reviews for holidays–somehow I tend to tie my holidays to movies more than to books.  I usually try to do something Christmas-related for December, I posted about Mr. Smith Goes to Washington for the 4th of July, and I reviewed Jesus Christ Superstar on Good Friday.  Although I did miss Guy Fawkes Day for V for Vendetta.

Among my more unusual holiday posts was reviewing Casablanca on Pearl Harbor Day, and the time I shared an old Star Trek fanfiction piece about a very unfortunate redshirt for Friday the 13th.

Bloggers, do you do holiday-themed reviews?  Readers, do you like to read holiday books close to their related day?
