Saturday Snapshot: New York, New York

As I’ve probably mentioned, one of my favorite things when I travel is to see places I’ve read about, or recognize from movies or TV.  So New York was quite the experience, as that seemed to be happening to me every time I turned around!  I counted media references in my trip scrapbook–over thirty.  I won’t try to tell you about all of them…  Here are just a few pictures I snapped with the thought, “oh, I’ve seen that!”

This bridge in Central Park is not only beautiful, but Patrick Dempsey strolls along it during Made of Honor, a very cute chick flick.

Bethesda Fountain, also in Central Park, figures in a great musical number in Enchanted.  It’s also the iconic image from Angels in America.  I recommend the first, not so much the second.

I was thrilled in Washington Square to unexpectedly stumble across the arch from August Rush, a wonderful movie starring Freddie Highmore.

Saturday Snapshot: Lazy Cat Photos

I am feeling inspiration-less with photography today.  Well, I actually have a couple of ideas, but not the time or the willpower to take the photos before I want to put this up!  So let’s have a lazy Saturday Snapshot with pictures of my cat being lazy. 🙂

Saturday Snapshot: Bad Wolf

My photo for this week is not impressive from a photography standpoint, but there is a fun story to it.

Doctor Who fans will know that “Bad Wolf” is a recurring phrase throughout the first few seasons of the new series.  It’s something that shows up in random places and in the backgrounds of scenes—like in graffiti.

So I was quite excited to see it scratched into a table at a restaurant.  That particular table is a big one in the back covered with random carvings and graffiti—none of the other tables are like that, so I have to assume the management gave approval at some point!  There are probably lots of references to different topics if I looked for them, but the “Bad Wolf” one excited me—because it’s graffiti of something that was, in its original form, graffiti…it’s like a double reference.

The first time I noticed the carving I was in the restaurant for a meeting of a Sci Fi Book Exchange, and I did not, alas, have a camera (though I was with people who understood my sudden exclamation).  Fortunately I was back a few weeks later with my book club, just after viewing the recent solar eclipse, and had my camera ready to go.  I hit a snag, though, because the table was occupied; there was a group there playing Magic.

I debated whether to ask them to move their game boards so I could take a picture, and finally decided…if there was ever a group likely to understand why I wanted to snap a picture of “Bad Wolf” graffiti, this was probably it, right?  So I asked, and they were gracious and didn’t look at me like I was crazy, and I got my picture.

And no, it’s not impressive photography.  But it’s graffiti of Doctor Who graffiti!  Either someone was very clever, or the Doctor and Rose came through for lunch one day.

Saturday Snapshot: Book Spreads

Do you ever spread your books all over the floor, to get a new look at them?  Or a possible photo opp?

Okay, maybe that’s just me.  But at various points I’ve spread out my book collections of three of my favorite authors–and they turned into interesting photos!  In ascending order by number of books…

I have 18 Tamora Pierce books – basically her entire Tortall series (except Mastiff; I’m waiting on the paperback), plus my favorite Magic Circle book.

L. M. Montgomery accounts for 46 volumes of my book collection.  There’s one book of poetry I still need, but other than that, I own, well, everything.  If she wrote it and it’s available, I have it.  I’m kind of a completist…  But you know what’s very frustrating?  I have 199 LMM short stories.  One more would make a round 200, but you can’t get another one anywhere (they exist, but they haven’t been printed).  I live in hope that someday they’ll put out a new collection.

And the biggest collection of all – 54 Edgar Rice Burroughs books.  I’ve added a few since this picture was taken.  Burroughs was extraordinarily prolific, so I still have about twenty left to collect…  Someday I’ll have them all, and then I won’t know what to do with myself in used bookstores!

Saturday Snapshot: Visiting Book Characters

I’ve mentioned before that I love visiting places that figure in books, and I’ve been lucky to do that fairly often.  Once in a great while, I get to visit a character from a book–sort of!

These are the original Winnie-the-Pooh characters, the dolls owned by Christopher Robin Milne, A. A. Milne’s son.  Rabbit and Owl were slightly more imaginary, and Roo was lost in an apple orchard around 1925, but you can go visit Kanga, Tigger, Edward Bear, Piglet and Eeyore at the New York Public Library.  There’s a lovely display in the children’s section.  You can’t see it in this picture, but Eeyore’s tail really is held on with a tack!

This is the Peter Pan Statue in Kensington Gardens, which is where Peter ran away to when he left home.  I don’t actually know those two little girls, but they happened to be there when I snapped the picture and I liked how it came out.  And I’m fascinated by the base of the statue–I see something new in it every time I look at it.

There aren’t very many bookish characters available to be visited…but at least there are plenty more bookish places I still want to go…
